Does CBD work for your skin?

CBD has taken the wellness industry by storm. From bath salts to scented candles to capsules, it is available in almost every form. There has also been an increase in skincare brands’ inclination towards providing more sophisticated and natural aesthetics like those infused with CBD. But does CBD works on the skin? Let’s find out.

What is CBD?

CBD is derived from the hemp plant which is a cousin of marijuana. Though both hemp and marijuana come from Cannabis Sativa, they differ from each other. Marijuana is known for its intoxicating effect due to its high content of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). However, the quantity of the same is low in hemp.

CBD works by binding to CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system (ECS). While CB1 receptors are responsible for emotions, memories, and coordination, CB2 mainly looks after the digestive and immune systems. Being the largest organ of our body, the skin has the maximum number of endocannabinoid receptors. CBD-infused topical skincare like creams, masks, and oil interact with these receptors and get you rid of the toxins that may accumulate on it due to external factors. Moreover, its anti-oxidants and essential fatty acids nourish the skin and help it remain fresh.

Benefits of CBD to skin

1. Gets rid you of Acne

Prolonged breakouts and acne can cause inflammation which can be painful. Though a little acne is normal, it becomes a problem when the excess oil, dirt, and dead skin cells clog pores. Studies show that regular use of CBD oil reduces the production of acne triggering sebum. Besides, it does not clog the skin like other cosmetic products which allows the skin to breathe and remain fresh.

2. Nourishes dry skin and helps with skin aging

Due to its mild nature and being a purely plant-based product, CBD works for all skin types. Packed with Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, it produces collagen which prevents loss of excess water and keeps the skin hydrated. This improves the skin’s regenerating ability and keeps it healthy in the long run.

3. Soothes conditions like Rosacea and Eczema

Studies reveal that CBD has the potential to alleviate inflammatory conditions like Rosacea and Eczema. CBD, acting as a modulator and regulator alters the activity of the endocannabinoid system and other biochemical receptors. As a result, the overall physiological functions of the body including the skin improve. Also, its anti-inflammatory properties reduce symptoms of inflammation including redness and itchiness.

Mary L. Stevenson, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at NYU claims that CBD is relatively safer than other cosmetic products. She further adds that any side effects that you might experience may be due to that other product on the shelf and not solely because of CBD.

We hope that the above article has cleared some of your concerns about CBD and skincare. So, if you have added CBD in your skincare regime and it isn’t giving you any trouble then you should consider continuing with it. Otherwise also, adding this subtle product for your skincare will prove a smart decision.
